The September Issues

Instyle – My first job in retail was at a small boutique in KW, Ontario and this boutique swore that Instyle was their fashion bible, it is good for some boutiques because I find this magazine to be one of the most commercial. This Septembers cover girl was Jennifer Garner and her colgate smile, the contents was comparable to the usual stuff which I love. The trends I pulled from this read was pretty much anything and everything, Tailored, Jewel Tones, Minimalism, GOLD, Mixing Prints & Longer Skirts, Menswear (isn’t that the same as tailored) Leather Jackets and Chunky Knits.

Elle – Love Julie Roberts on the cover and completely suitable with the release of her new movie Eat, Pray, Love. I think Elle is one of the most underrated magazines on the shelves and the web content is usually pretty good to. I loved the personification of the trends and the Elle-itude of the writing. The trend titles I loved are Baroque Beauty, Saddle Up and New School which translates to Old English/Victorian, Equestrian and Preppy looks for Fall. Yay.

Vanity Fair – Lady Gaga, Gaga. Great choice. Fashion was sort of lagging in this publication but love the editorial content. Major vanity fair trend would be Preppy I think. Makes sense I think.

Fashion – Olsen, LOVE! These girls are making waves in the fashion biz these days with The Row and their contemporary collection Elizabeth & James. Trends are Sporty, Ladies First, Simple Plan, Coat Tales, Which Craft and Print Run. In other words American style sportswear, Feminine skirts and dresses, Clean cut and tailored clothes, Long coats, Chunky Knits and Animal Print.

Flare – One of the best things about this issue was the use of an actual Model on the cover, Doutzen Kroes, graces the September issue which is a pleasure we don’t see that often. The main fashion message was that this Fall is all about “timeless classics updated with a playful edge.” Another one of my favorite things about Flare is following @LisaTant on Twitter.

Vogue – No comment on the Halle Berry cover girl shoot because I really didn’t understand the choice here. The fashion report and social, editorial content is always my favourite. The shoots were INCREDIBLE, loving the trend selections from Military, Leather and Lace, Florals and Headgear. Not much to say about vogue, it speaks for itself.

Hope you enjoyed my two cents. Live. Love. Style. xoxo

Heels and HeART

Today we have the pleasure of being featured on heelsandheart.com and last year Joshua and I had the pleasure of judging the Heels and HeART Wearable Art Show. The dynamic event “is a design competition combining fashion and art to make a difference. This glamorous soirée brings together fashionistas, art lovers and industry experts to be wowed by the creations of up-and-coming Montreal designers. Prizes are awarded for the top 3 designs and all proceeds from the event are donated to a benefiting charity.” At JoshuaDAVID we are committed to giving back to the communities that support us, and we love this initiative because it combines a charitable cause with support for our talented, emerging MTL talent. xoxo Live. Love. Style.

Cloud Nine

Presenting our first window collaboration with Noëlly from www.miss-sly.com and a behind the scenes look at how we put everything together. Window dressing is one of my favorite projects, creating a scene to display our fabulous fashion while conveying the emotion and creativity behind each piece is fun but can also be a daunting task. When Noëlly and I first set out to create the “Cloud Nine” window we were inspired by the height of our workspace and wondered how we could marry that fact with the confidence you feel when you’re dressed to the nines.

So we had our theme, Cloud Nine, a literal and figurative representation of the aspirational and emotional connection to fashion.

Putting a concept into reality is the second part of the challenge, but we figure that nothing is impossible with a little ingenuity and hard work. Noëlly and I hand cut each of the clouds, covered the inspiration boards with cloud filled fabric and hung each piece separately to bring our big idea to fruition.  Here is the play by play:

Five Hundred Tweets

Follow JoshuaDAVIDinc on twitter and get exclusive updates as we approach the grand opening of JoshuaDAVID in Westmount, QC!!!!!!! 11:54 AM Aug 1st, 2009 via web

In case you can’t tell from my first tweet (above) I really didn’t know what I was doing with Twitter until some amazing followers answered my call and helped me out. Just over a year later here we are at my five hundredth tweet,  a momentous occasion, sort of surprised I actually made it this far ha-ha. But I want to take a moment to recognize those who helped and I highly recommend following these fashionable folks: @jenn_nachshen @Fashionights @Julio_ReyesCA @Hg2Montreal @MissSLY @milly_lt @JannaZittrer @ChristineisMe @VitaminDailyMTL @ccmacpherson @Fashionista514 @Audrwey @shedoesthecity

Apologies to anyone I missed, I wish I could have listed all of you :)

Five hundred tweets is also thanks to the awesome Blackberry for Twitter App, Twitoaster and Foursquare. Foursquare is new for me, and again I am lost, which you probably noticed when I ended up here: I’m at Lakeshore Camp (Cobourg). via foursquare

I digress, Social Media is a fast paced, expansive environment that I am happy to be a part of and appreciative for all the attention you give! Five hundred tweets is only because I had someone to tweet too, so thank you. Thank you for following, re tweeting, quoting, tagging and tweeting. Social media wouldn’t be very social if you weren’t all a part of it. So here is to the  next five hundred. Watch out for more fashion filled updates from the world of @JoshuaDAVIDmtl, the adventures of Joshua and I and some special announcements just for you.

And if anyone wants to put in a good word i’d love to be followed by @LisaTant, @bryanboy & @taylorswift13 (i know ha-ha) xo Live. Love. Style.

Leighton Meester was spotted in NYC while filming the fourth season of Gossip Girl in this architectural animalistic ensemble, which we LOVE. Cap sleeve, above knee, buckle detailed sheaths in contrasting tonal animal prints oh my! Can’t wait to see this on screen, the fourth season of Gossip Girl is scheduled to premiere September 13, 2010.

New Arrivals!

Born in 2002, Alice + Olivia was formed out of designer Stacey Bendet’s personal desire to create the perfect pair of pants! Her signature style was met with great success, and “Stacey Pants” quickly became the benchmark for denim designers. The brand has continued to expand its collection launching a cashmere collection shortly after and the full contemporary collection in 2005, turning Alice + Olivia into the quintessential brand for trend setting, luxury fashion. We thought the strength this season was dresses, and Alice + Olivia offered us everything we wanted from sequins, to feathers and leather embellishments. Our assortment will suit many of our clients from 25 to 55 and will hit all of the Fall 2010 fashion trends, here is a preview:

Loving the LBD

Origins of the little black dress date back as early as the 1920′s when designers such as Coco Chanel and Hubert de Givenchy, imagined the LBD to become a staple in the modern woman’s wardrobe. The ubiquity of this essential is thanks to its befitting look – dressed up or down, the statement can be fun, powerful, emotional and glamorous. We’ve covered all the bases with this selection of LBD’s from alice + olivia!

by Malene Birger A/W 2010

Autumn Winter 2010 Collection is a tribute to genuine, long-lasting relationships. It urges people to embrace what is important to them in life, and to revel in the joy awoken by friends, family, work, art and music.

The relationship is a visual story depicting the rich fabrics of the BY MALENE BIRGER universe. Rooted in the importance of the relationship to the company’s own creative and dedicated employees, it embodies the deep emotional foundation from which the brand arises, the relationship represents the season look – a relaxed elegance worn with a comfortable and sincere honesty.

For Ms. Birger the collection is a revival of a period that felt genuine – a fond recollection of the late ’70′s and early 80′s when the bohemian style was replaced by sophisticated sensuality, this transformation is expressed as a new defiant luxury redefining basic styles in startling ways. This Autumn the track suit could be the new suit. The knit wear could be the new coat, and the shirt the new t-shirt.

The mood is authentic and full of contrasts: the cozy comfort of home opposite the harsh winter landscape, the strong mix of leather, fur, tweed and knit recalling memories from lost times.

Ms. Birger’s personal approach to the relationship is symbolized in the eyes. In them you see true feelings, and through them you experience life. The eyes reflect the soul and reveal ones true character. They are evidenced in the collection as graphic prints made by Ms. Birger herself.

The Autumn Winter 2010 Collection challenges you to choose what is meaningful to you in your life – only then can you form deep, long-lasting relationships.

ENJOY…

- Malene Birger

Tara Jarmon Automne Hiver 2010/2011

An encounter : between a businessman, David Jarmon, and a young and lovely Canadian student, Tara. They combined their talents and gave birth to a project : a line of clothing. He manages it, she is in charge of the design. She gives it her name and her spirit, that is to say joy, pureness, freshness, spontaneity. A brand is born, Tara Jarmon. Smart and comfortable pieces, colored and sexy but never provocative, embellished with details such as embroidery, a bow, a flower; sober cuts, in sweet and silky materials : muslin, cotton, satin, velvet. In short, a line which is perfectly adapted to a modern, elegant, self-confident, dynamic woman. Tara Jarmon is the embodiment of a pure feminine simplicity. A Parisian and at the same time a universal brand. Tara’s Automne/Hiver 2010/2011 Collection has just arrived in store, offering our clientele rich riding pants, lace skirts and elegant evening coats. This collection is a must see!

LIVE. Love. Style.

We love when clients share photos of themselves wearing JoshuaDAVID fashions, and we LOVE the way this western Canadian client pairs her Charlotte Hosten collar with this strapless dress. The silver brooch matches brilliantly with the pewter finish of the dress and the navy beads and silk fabric is the perfect accent. Thanks for sharing! xoxo Live. Love. Style.

Investment In Sentiment

The renewal of an economy often brings a sensibility back to our wardrobe, this year the look was everywhere from the runway to the freeway in an effort to revitalize, push forward and come out stronger. We learn. We grow. When we were buying last Fall, we noticed many designers took this approach to heart and created collections that will stand the test of time. The assortment we offer this fall/winter season is right on trend with the return of ladylike sentiment (investment) dressing, an understanding that classic shapes, structures & embellishment is as energized and current as ever. Knee-length skirts & dresses, a wardrobe of jackets, sophisticated essentials and feminine, luxe sleeve lengths nod to the last economic recovery in the early 1940′s. The era of $1,624- shredded, ripped cotton T’s (yes, Balmain really did it) is over and everyone, even Balmain, is moving on to tailored, polished & chic collections. Live. Love. Style. xoxo Stay tuned for deliveries from BOSS Black, by Malene Birger, Tara Jarmon & Lida Baday.

Boutique Buying

On the cusp of couture week is the release of Spring/Summer 2011 Ready to Wear collections from many designers such as BOSS Black. Joshua and I just got back from NYC to begin planning our assortment for next year and I thought this would be a good time to share our experience with Boutique Buying. There isn’t really a science to buying, mostly the success of each season depends on how well you know your client – we have the advantage at JoshuaDAVID because we take this approach in everything we do.

Whether we are preparing your coffee, choosing an outfit or purchasing next seasons collections we think of our client first. Value second. Trends third. That being said when we go buying we are shopping for our clients, we edit through the designers offering by marking names beside pieces we intend to show each of you. To give you an idea of how much there is too choose from, I took this pic at one of our designers showrooms – keep in mind that this is only a quarter of the collection ha-ha. Live. Love. Style. xoxo

Cool ‘n Chic

Extreme temperatures often make fashionable dress a little tough, but there is a remedy for this affliction –  accessories. If you’ve been living through the Montreal heat this week you’ve shed the jackets, boleros and sleeves in hope of refuge from this dessert like temperature, but in true JoshuaDAVID fashion you refuse to give up your style! We suggest throwing a light weight necklace over the tank your sporting or add a bold new nail polish to your toes – these options are not bulky, don’t add weight to your already hot body and maintain your unique sense of style.

Hottest accessory this week? WATER, Stay Hydrated Luv!

4 Words: Mackage Ready-to-Wear

Designers Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy’s first full ready-to-wear collection made a strong fashionable debut on the Runways on New York Fashion week, staying true to the houses reputation for quality, edgy styling & wearability. JoshuaDAVID is proud to support these MTL Designers, offering most of the new rtw collection in its debut season with key blouses and dresses arriving this week. The look is very body conscious, sculptured and current while maintaining a sensibility that will speak to all of our clients. The fabrics are wearable, bodysuits ensure that tailored blouses will stay put (whether paired with shorts this summer or trousers this fall) and each piece stands independently which makes getting dressed simple! This attainable luxury look, aka totally reasonable prices, is a sure fire success this season and we can’t wait to dress you in it. Here is a preview of what’s coming this week…
